What measurements do I need to calculate the amount of gravel I need?

It is important to work out the area coverage by multiplying the length by the width and then the depth of the area to cover. The depth is least important as we typically recommend a depth of 30-50mm coverage with all decorative aggregates, chippings, gravel, slates and pebbles.

How do I measure up the surface area of my garden or driveway?

We recommend measuring the surface area of your garden with a tape measure. Start by measuring the longest length and width of your garden. If you have any irregular or curved areas, you can break the area down into manageable rectangles and triangles and measure each one separately. Once you have all your measurements, simply multiply the length by the width of each area to calculate the square footage.

What is the density of gravel?

The density of gravel varies depending on the type of gravel you select. Smaller pebbles and gravels have a lower density while larger ones have a higher density.

How deep should I lay gravel for my garden or driveway?

We recommend a depth of 30-50mm coverage with all decorative aggregates, chippings, gravel, slates and pebbles.

Does this gravel calculator work with every type of aggregate?

Yes, it does. The calculator tool is an approximate guide but we’ve been using this guide for many years and it seems a robust method to get the right results.
